Research Overview

GHK-Cu (Glycyl-L-Histidyl-L-Lysine:Copper²⁺) is a naturally occurring human plasma copper-binding peptide first identified in 1973. It is present in plasma, saliva, and urine, and its plasma concentration decreases significantly with age, declining from approximately 200ng/mL at age 20 to 80ng/mL by age 60. Research has established GHK-Cu as a potent inducer of tissue remodeling through its interaction with the copper chaperone Atox1 and activation of the SP1 transcription factor. It has been shown to modulate over 4,000 genes, with a particular focus on anti-inflammatory pathways. Studies have demonstrated GHK-Cu's ability to stimulate collagen, elastin, glycosaminoglycan, and decorin synthesis while suppressing metalloproteinases responsible for collagen degradation. This dual action positions it as a compelling subject in regenerative medicine research. Preclinical research has also examined GHK-Cu's effects on nerve regeneration, antioxidant gene activation (SOD1, SOD2, catalase), and its paradoxical ability to both stimulate and suppress specific growth factors depending on tissue type.
